Lettman, Borrelli taking concerns with MCAA to legislative leaders

KINGMAN — The Mohave County Board of Supervisors is taking its feud with the Mohave County Airport Authority on the road — literally.
Supervisors Rich Lettman and Sonny Borrelli are scheduled to meet Friday with Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen and Speaker of the House Steven Montenegro regarding the board’s concerns regarding the conduct and operations of the airport authority that controls not only Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport but a large swath of commercial land surrounding the airport in Bullhead City.
According to the county, Friday’s meeting will focus on “reviewing a resolution of displeasure passed by the board of supervisors on July 21” that presented three major points of contention:
- A lack of response by the MCAA board of directors to the supervisors’ formal request of audited financial statements from the MCAA.
- Failure to provide a timely and relevant presentation at a BOS meeting as had been requested.
- A renewed call for appointment of a county representative as a voting member of the airport authority’s board.

The two supervisors also will present allegations of potential open meeting law violations and what they believe are financial irregularities that have occurred under the present board.
“This meeting presents an important step toward transparency and accountability in a matter that directly impacts our taxpayers and the future of aviation and economic development in Mohave County,” said Borrelli, a former state senator who now represents most of Lake Havasu City on the five-member Board of Supervisors. “I will also be consulting with President Petersen and Speaker Montenegro to request the intervention of the Joint Legislative Audit Committee and the services of the Arizona Auditor General.”
Lettman, who represents Bullhead City on the county’s governing board, told the Bullhead City Council at a workshop last week that the county’s intention is to coax the airport authority to renegotiate a lease that is in effect through 2049 and to force a change in leadership on the MCAA board.
“The stonewalling and delay tactics coming from airport leadership needs to stop,” Lettman said. “We owe it to our residents to pursue answers and ensure that agencies operate within the law and with full transparency.”
